Yelagiri is a small hill station in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, located at an altitude of 1,110.6 meters above Mean Sea Level and spread across 30 kms, the Yelagiri village is surrounded by beautiful orchards, rose-gardens, and green valleys.

The hill station dates back to the British colonial days. The Whole of Yelagiri was once the private property of the Yelagiri Zamindar Family. It was taken over by the government of India during the Early 1950s.  Father Francis of Don Bosco, worked for the uplift of hill tribals. He has been the main reason for the educational upliftment to the people of Yelagiri.

Location And Overview: –

Since it is a small hill station Yelagiri is not as developed like Kodaikanal or Ooty. However, it is an ideal location for trekking and other adventure sports like rock climbing, paragliding etc. Thus, the district administration has now taken up the task of developing Yelagiri Hills into a tourist destination. It is a well constructed destination marked with proper milestones and signboards. There are enough petrol pumps and eateries which makes travelling convenient and enjoyable.

Trekking Fun Unlimited: –

At a distance of 230 km from Chennai, Yelagiri is a hill region in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu and is one of the famous places for trekkers in India. The hill station is located at a height of 1410.6 meters above sea level. The highest point in Yelagiri is the Swamimalai Hill, standing tall at 4,338 ft with spectacular views. The view from the summit is spectacular. The hill provides a good number of trekking trails through thick reserved forests. Mangalam, a small village, is at the base of this hill. There are other trekking options that include smaller peaks like Javadi Hills and Palamathi Hills.

Other Attractions:-

 There are few other places of interest as well – the Jalagamparai waterfalls and the Velavan temple are well known amongst others. Yelagiri comprises 14 hamlets and a number of temples spread over several hills. A nature park established in the year 2008 is another nice place to visit. It has an aquarium, rose garden, an artificial water falls, Musical fountain. A nice place for kids to relax and a family outing.  Yelagiri Hills is also home to hundreds of snakes. Thankfully, most of them are non – poisonous yet the dense thick forests provide a natural habitat to them. The famous Yelagiri summer festival is celebrated in end of May which is organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Board. Stalls from different departments, flower shows, dog shows and a variety of cultural programs are conducted every year. People from all over the State and other parts of the country participate in this annual festival.

Topography:-

The climate in Yelagiri is classified as tropical in nature. Summer months see a lot of rainfall as compared to the winter months. Summer months see a maximum of 30°C & Minimum of 18°C 
whereas the winter months the maximum is 24°C & minimum is10°C.

Reach and Proximity:-

Yelagiri is close to Cuddalore, can be reached in about 5 hours so it is a perfect weekend getaway destination. Temperatures are fairly low but it can get a bit sunny in the noon. Plenty of hotels and restaurants are available.

Yelagiri is a quiet unassuming place and even though there isn’t much to do, but if you are looking for some peace and quiet and just connect with nature, look no further. Yelagiri Hills won’t disappoint. It is beautiful and scenic and you get to see an amazing view all along till you reach your destination.
