The Greenfield project connecting Chennai and Bengaluru would aid in the development of areas alongside the route from Hoskote near Bengaluru to Sriperumbudur. The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is a proposed expressway between the cities of Bengaluru (Karnataka) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu). It will have 6 lanes and will run 262 km allowing vehicles to reach 120 km/h (75 mph).
The expressway would serve as an alternative to the existing and popular national highways from Bengaluru to Krishnagiri, Ranipet to Krishnagiri and Chennai to Ranipet. The road currently in use is stretched beyond limits and carries heavy to very heavy traffic during the weekends which makes it very chaotic. This project will definitely bring respite to travellers.
The 262-km-long proposed green field road connecting Chennai with Bengaluru is progressing with nearly 85 per cent of the land acquisition process being completed in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and 60 per cent completed in Tamil Nadu.
Recently, a separate Project Implementation Unit (PIU) was created and will be headed by an officer in the rank of a Project Director. This is important as the right expertise and experience is a must to complete a project of this magnitude.
“The mode of funding and implementation are under discussion. It is being considered to implement the six-lane project in a phased manner. The road will require nearly 2,300 hectares of land and take three years to construct after the completion of land acquisition. Detailed traffic survey and demand forecast, study of toll system of expressway, and study of social environment are recommended to be carried out in further stages.
Underpasses were planned for vehicles at elephant crossings. Routes taken by elephants have been identified and efforts would be taken to minimize man-animal conflict at these points, officials said. The road would also have four road over bridges across level crossings. There are two in Tamil Nadu and one each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The proposed road would be an access-controlled one and would have several major interchanges with entry/exit points every 25 km.
India has approximately 340 million km total road length, making it one of the largest road networks in the world. However, most of its regional roads are still unpaved. Since the Bangalore–Chennai Expressway is the highest priority expressway network in India, this project will serve as a beneficial road link between Bangalore and Chennai.
